Several ardent and thought provoking poems are provided below. They were penned by a relatively unknown poet named Elizabeth Margaret Chandler in the early 1830’s. Her poems and this book were published in 1836 in Philadelphia by Benjamin Lundy, who is responsible for this compilation of the unsung poet’s musings. Elizabeth M. Chandler was born on Christmas Eve, 1807 near the banks of the Brandywine River in New Castle County, Delaware. This rare book also contains a description of Chandler’s life by Lundy, who laments Chandler’s lack of notoriety as a poet, due he seems to feel, to her gender.
This Old Book appears on this blog every Wednesday morning.
