Hidden Jewel of Poetry

February is African American History Month.  The Society owns a rare and fascinating collection of poems penned in 1911 by African American poet Stanford E. Davis. Many of his poems are written in a colorful, informal vernacular (slang) which are usually adjacent to poems written with lofty, grammatical elegance.
