Remembering World War I on Independence Day

It was during this week, one hundred years ago, that the first Americans began landing on the shores of France at the port of Saint Nazaire. Although these “Doughboys” (as the British referred to the American troops) would not see military action until October, the entrance of the Americans into the conflict was a major turning point in the war and the beginning of the end for the Central Powers.

Also this week in 1917: Greece declared War on Germany and its allies and Lawrence of Arabia led a band a Arab rebels to seize the Jordanian port of Aqaba.
